Before Gutenberg editor it was not needed to make any additional changes to your WordPress theme with Classic editor. But with introduction of Gutenberg editor it is different. Even after developing the WordPress theme, the developer must make it compatible with Gutenberg editor.
In Gutenberg you have full images, wide images, responsive embeds, floated elements and so on. A developer must make all this to work in his WordPress theme. For that developer needs to make changes to CSS file, and add some classes.
